Shyleen Williams Essay

I am a mother of two beautiful children, Daishanae, my daughter is six-years old and my son Anthony is five-months. I have taken care of my children on my own. It hasn't been easy as I have not earned much money during my employment history.

When I lost my last job I fell into hard times, but managed to keep my children well. As a result, I had to move in with a girl-friend of many years. Although I am grateful she took me and the children in, we live in the living room of a one bedroom apartment. This situation made me realize I need to do more for myself and my children. I am presently working at the Emergency Housing Group in Middletown, NY. This is a seasonal part-time job that will end April 4, 2013.

My past work history was working in nursing homes and I loved what I did. As a result I decided to go back to school and become a certified nurse assistant. The training for this career is provided by BOCES, is 30 days training, and the school has a strong employment placement rate. By completing this training I can become gainfully employed, which will allow me to maintain an upcoming apartment, pay bills, and other basic necessities one needs to survive.

The course begins April 1, 2013 to May 5, 2013 and will cost $1,495.00. The fee includes the fee for me to take the New York State exam.

I am humbly asking for assistance as it would be very difficult for me to pay this amount out of pocket. I have recently moved myself and the children into our own apartment by March 11, 2013. This has caused us to really struggle with finances.

If you require further information please feel free to call me. Any help that you can render me will be highly appreciated. I thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Shyleen Williams Nomination Letter

Louis Marcone
Director of Intensive Preventive Services
Orange County Youth Advocate Program

I am writing in reference to Shyleen Williams a 31 year old mother of two young children. Shyleen and her husband Dennis Cashdollar have been facing terrible economic struggles while caring for their children. Both have worked numerous part time and seasonal jobs in an attempt to provide for their children. While doing so both have also attempted to receive vocational and educational training. Dennis is working on attaining a CASAC licensing and Shyleen has the opportunity to finish a Certified Nursing Assistant program through Orange County Bosces. She only needs another semester to finish this program. Previously she had been paying the tuition fees on her own but the family recently allocated a new apartment, in order to get out of a shelter. Expenses with the move, rent and utilities have stretched their finances to the limit. Their seasonal jobs are coming to a close and there simply is not enough money left over to cover the $1500.00 tuition fee. I am making a request that the YAP Endowment grant Ms. Williams $1,500.00 so that she can finish her CNA training. Once she becomes licensed CNA she can allocate full time work that will help sustain her family and alleviate financial stressors.

Shyleen wants to become economically independent. While she is appreciative of social service help she wants to independently care for her family. Shyleen and her husband have been struggling with part time jobs to provide for their family and have paid for a large portion of their vocational training. Shyleen just needs a little help to be able to finish. Shyleen and her husband have faced their troubles and hardships head on. When referred to the Improving Families for services, she and her husband embraced the services. They appreciated the help and followed through with all of their caseworker's recommendations. I could go on and write several more statements as to why Ms. Williams deserves, but instead have attached a letter she has written herself for your review. She wanted to make sure her own voice was included in this request. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you in advance for your consideration in this matter.
