YAP helps keep youth out of secure facilities and living in their communities according to a newly released analysis of post-discharge data (YAPfacts June 2014). The post-discharge analysis is the third in a series of issue briefs focused on juvenile justice youth served by YAP’s community-based programs across the country.
John Jay researchers examined 6 to 12 months post discharge data for 1,851 of YAP’s juvenile justice cases. The sample included high-risk, high-need youth including those with prior out-of-home placements and prior dispositions.
Post-discharge analyses indicate that YAP has the greatest impact on high-risk youth in terms of their living situation. Analyses of youth with one of more out-of-home placements prior to entering YAP indicate that the number of youth living in the community doubled between entry and 6 to 12 months following discharge.
Successful post-discharge outcomes reflect YAP’s work to prepare youth for success in the community while they are enrolled in the program. As noted in a previous analysis (YAPfacts April 2014), John Jay researchers found that YAP increases the likelihood that clients will remain positively engaged after YAP services terminate.
