YAP Regional Director Participates in Discussion on Disproportionate Minority Contact In Chicago Public Schools

Today, Dave Williams, YAP's Regional Director in Chicago, will be partcipating in a forum on school discipline reform and racial equity.  The event titled "Pushed Out, Arrested, Locked Up: Addressing Racial Inequalities in School Discipline" is sponsored by the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC).

The JJC reports that "there were 3,020 arrests inside Chicago Public Schools in 2014.  Of those arrests, 2335 were African Americans.  Put another way - for every 100 students there were 27 black  youth arrested and only 1 white youth arrested."

Dave joins a panel of school administrators, students, parents, and advocates in a candid discission about the challenges schools and families face in enforcing and experiencing school-based discipline and how and why young people of color are disproportionately impacted by harsh school discipline practices.
