In the August 19, 2012 NY Times Magazine, author Paul Tough frames the issue of poverty in America through the lens of YAP Chicago Director Steve Gates and his work with YAP kids and families in Chicago's Roseland community. It is a poignant look at poverty in America and what Steve and his YAP team have been able to do to help the families who would otherwise be left behind. Tough, who advocates for funding programs like YAP to reach the most hard-to-reach families, notes in the story the pending closure of YAP's Chicago program due to a loss in funding.

The City of Chicago has recently granted YAP funding for a 6-month youth employment program. This funding helps us continue to support some of the City's most high-risk youth, but we are working raise money to support a full anti-violence / gang intervention program on the south and west sides where the need is great and are staff are uniquely experienced.
